To say that reigning Pro Mod world champion Josh Hernandez has had great success at Houston Raceway Park would be an understatement the size of his home state of Texas. Beginning with his rookie year in 2005, the driver of the Team Rage ’68 Camaro has dominated every event he’s competed in at what he calls his home track and is looking to make his streak a “four-peat” this weekend when the JEGS ProMod Challenge takes to the track at the O’Reilly NHRA Spring Nationals in Baytown, Texas.
“There’s just something about HRP that gets us all going,” Hernandez said. “From the very first time we won back in ’05 and right up until today, there’s a lot of ‘hometown magic’ when we pull into the gates.”
Coming off a quarterfinal finish at the series season opener in Gainesville, Fla., Hernandez is anxious to get his Jim Oddy-tuned Chevy on the track. With weather forecasts calling for the possibility of rain on Saturday and Sunday, he said the importance of coming off the trailer with a good number is magnified.
“We had limited qualifying in Gainesville because of the rain which kept us from getting information about the way the car handles with our new setup. Since we might only get Friday’s qualifying in, it’s that much more important to get a good number early to get in the show,” he said.
“We definitely have the car that can run 5.80’s and 5.90’s given the right conditions, and if Friday is cool and even slightly dry, the sea-level air could give us some of the best runs we’ve seen in a while. My family and a lot of friends from work will be at the event, so, I will definitely have my hands full but that’s what makes Houston so special for me,” Hernandez said.
Qualifying rounds are scheduled for 1:30 and 7 p.m. Friday and 11 a.m. Saturday. Eliminations begin Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m. and continue Sunday beginning at 11 a.m. (CDT).
